I remember as a child how much fun Mum and Dad put into Christmas.
There was not huge money to spend in a family of 5 children.
The Christmas Tree was a branch cut from a fruit tree and coloured white by us with shoe
cleaner, decorations were made by hand.
Santa’s sack at the foot of each bed was a pillow case, and inevitably made to look full
come Christmas morning with a well-positioned balloon. I remember waking at around
4am, unable to wait any more and having a peek at what was contained. The day was
filled with play, family visits and cousins.
It is a good reminder that huge wealth is not needed to be happy.
Dad is now gone, but Mum is still here – a shrinking 97-year-old, still in her own home
where we all grew up! I look forward to days ahead with her as well as memories of days
behind.
Wherever your Christmas may be, whatever and whoever it may contain, I would like to
wish the very best for you and all of your families this holiday period.
Merry Christmas,
Alan Heath
